Exploring the currents of modern China

Games, Gamification, and Kwests with Frank Yu

This week, I speak with the most popular non-Chinese man with a Chinese family name in China, Frank Yu.

Frank has been in China for quite awhile working for Microsoft and in the gaming industry.  A long time mentor, Frank has started his own company, Kwestr, a “gamification layer” that helps make life a little more interesting by leveraging your friends on Facebook or Sina Weibo, or both (gasp!).

Who thought peer pressure could be this much fun?

He is, by far, the most interesting person in the tech scene here in China with lots of experience, knowledge, and corny jokes.

We talk about why games so compelling, why we play games, as well as how board games were the first actual social games (and many multiple times better than what you’ll find on Facebook or Weibo)
